BEARD PINS
BEARD PINS
When I first came to Penland as a Studio Assistant in 2017 I was working intensely on my hygiene fascination and the beginning of what became an entire body of work on routine However near the end I felt a little burnt out, so I challenged myself to make 100 beard pins (wearable pins that were small stylized drawings of beards- hair growth of the face) in one night. I ended up expanding my time frame to 2 days, and then later spent even more time in the intricacies of naming them. But it allowed me to feel as if I wasn't going back on my metalsmithing training and room to laugh at myself. Since then they have evolved and I have continued to make them. Now each pin has its own individual intricate drawing.
These are pins made to be stylized versions of various beard and mustache combination. I then sit down with my friends and we debate what type of guy, personality, cultural reference, a person from our past, represents this image, and assign it a witty quip. Each beard has a description and when it is sold I make an individualized hand drawn card that includes a head and outfit drawing with the description.
